A story with deep roots...

Domenico Clerico

For a long time, my father grew grapes that he took to the still-existent Cantina Sociale Terre del Barolo, and a modest amount of fruit that he sold at local markets.
It was a small agricultural holding with about 4 to 5 hectares of land.

In 1976 he asked me if I wanted to take over the running of the company. With the agreement with my wife Giuliana I set out on this great adventure. In those days, growing grapes and selling them was not very profitable, so I decided to try my hand at making wine.

As my adventure unfolded, the decision to become a wine producer meant I was faced with the need to increase the amount of land under cultivation, and so in 1977 I bought a small plot in the heart of the "Bussia" district. The result was Bricotto Bussia, my first Barolo produced in 1979. Then in 1981 I managed to get hold of a fantastic vineyard on the Ginestre hill in Monforte, from which I produce Ciabot Mentin barolo. In 1990 I bought another piece of land in the same area where I make Pajana barolo, and in 1995 a vineyard situated in an area known as Mosconi, which is where Percristina barolo originates.

With a lot of hard work, enthusiasm and some frustration, we built up a company which now comprises 21 hectares of vineyards producing a total of around 110,000 bottles a year.

Production is divided as follows:

• Langhe dolcetto "Visadì"
• Barbera d'Alba "Trevigne"
• Langhe nebbiolo "Capisme-e"
• Langhe rosso "Arte"
(a blend of two grapes: 90% Nebbiolo + 10% Barbera)
• Three Barolo crus (Ciabot Mentin, Pajana, Percristina)

However, not satisfied with the experience acquired over the years, in the period between 2005 and 2006 I actively looked for a new objective that would give me the right incentive to put myself to the test once more. This translated into the search for a new wine.

So it was that I looked for and found the right vineyard to work in another significant barolo township called Serralunga, which in some aspects is similar to Monforte, and which allowed me to create a Barolo with the strange name of Aeroplanservaj.
